Shale is formed from the cementation and lithification of very small grains of rock, commonly mud or clay. The small clast size indicates that though the grains had been heavily eroded, the rock formed in a low energy environment. Ideal for sedimentary rock identification & classification exercises due to argillaceous shale's recognizable fissile habit.
While each specimen will vary slightly in shape, size and color, it will measure approximately 1" in length. Specimen is packaged in a transparent bag that is labeled & barcoded for easy identification and storage.
