Photogates allow for extremely accurate timing of events in various physics experiments including when studying freefall, air track collisions, the speed of a rolling object and pendulum periods. Uses infrared light to calculate the period of an oscillatory system, the number of times a photogate was blocked or the time an object takes to pass through one of both photogates. This can then be used to calculate the velocities and accelerations of a variety of objects.
